How to restore greyed out Desktop icons and greyed out photos for Vista!!!

Hello and good evening, ive just recenlty sorted out a virus that was causing havoc with my friends laptop, all been sorted, just that now all the desktop icons are greyed out, and when i open photo folders, all the folders are greyed out but when i click on any phots, they all open ok, any suggestions please?? Opearating system is windows Vista
