Windows 7 intermittent internet disconnection

Apologies if this is the wrong forum. A recently purchased Windows 7 laptop is working fine apart from very annoying random disconnections from the internet. I use the computer about twice a week and tends to be on for about 8 hour sessions, during which time internet is typically lost 1-3 times. Turning the router on and off re-establishes connection. The Windows troubleshooting software says "The default gateway is not available" whatever that may mean. The router is a 2-3 year old netgear cabled model, but worked prefectly with previous vista computers - problem only began when I switched to windows 7. From Google searches it appears my problem is far from unique but I have been unable to find a recognized solution.
