W7 - Backup?

Just given in and taken delivery of a new HP PC with W7 Pro. Burnt the recovery discs, transferred data fron old XP machine to new. Then offered me Windows Backup. I've done this to an external HDD.

Question - is this as effective as, say, Acronis or Paragon etc as a means of restoration if all hell breaks out?
