Hard Drive Test

I think I have an intermittent fault with my hard drive. Every now and again it wont start up and has a black screen saying something like invalid disk press ctrl+alt+del to continue - but nothing. How do I know its that for sure or something else, is there a test I can do on it when it is working?

Or what else could it be?

Thanks.

If you go to the drive manufacturer's website, they may have a diagnostic tool you can download to check for any faults.
