Import Lotus .123 files into Excel?

I'm considering switching from Lotus 1-2-3 to MS Excel for my spreadsheets. According to the MS blurb, it can handle Lotus spreadsheets, but the 30-day trial version I've downloaded doesn't seem to be able to.
The drop-down list of file types in Excel lists several other types, but not Lotus 1-2-3. When I select "All files" and try to open a .123 file with MS Excel 2010, it reports "The file is not in a recognisable format". I currently don't have Lotus 1-2-3 on my PC, so can't use it to export the files in MS Excel format. Is there any other simple way of getting them from .123 into Excel, please?
Or is the trial version of Excel less capable than the paid-for version?

If you can save the Lotus file as a csv this can then be imported into Excel

bremner, I can't save the Lotus files because I no longer have Lotus on my PC.
wiz-king, OpenOffice has done the job. I've lost formatting, but the numbers and formulae seem okay. Thanks.
