seems like the white band on the bottom of the screen was a simple status bar ?. After it completes (approx 30 mins) windows bliss appears !

reinstall software requires restart that happens to make the REBOOT sequence start the LONG process, of starting. meanwhile we have the black screen (with the white band)

HELP !!! Patio window is within throwing distance of the PC !

What happens if you reboot without reinstalling.

Long wait usually only happens first time after an install as windows sorts drivers for all the kit it finds in your machine.

You have too many processors starting at boot and your Anti-Virus may be doing scans. Go to Run and type

MSCONFIG then go to Startup Tab after pressing Enter key, check all that's got a tick to see what is starting at boot

Bad install missing or corrupt windows files

Start - run - type

sfc /scannow

press OK

Let windows find and replace bad files you will probably need to have the XP cd in the drive.
