Programmes disappeared!!

Dont ask how but my husband has obviously done something on our home pc. He logged in this morning and all that is on the desktop is the recycle bin - all other programmes have gone. Clicked on Start and then All Programs but comes up as empty. Have a bad feeling about this but is there anyting we can do?

Right click on Start then properties, and make sure (Start Menu) has a black dot in (Start Menu.) Or (Classic Start Menu.) click in one and then Apply and OK. What is your OS

System restore to before the problem occured

First I would try a reboot of pc. It may just be a glitch. Switch pc off completely and then switch on and restart. While it is all switched off hold in the Power button for 20 secs to discharge any residual current.
