It sounds as if he is using the wrong setting for the outgoing (SMTP) server. Is the email address the same as his ISP? If not then the settings (incoming and outgoing) will be different.

Hi Sea Urchin Thanks for your reply The settings appear to be ok when I spoke to him on the phone can they somehow alter without any interfierence from him. He seems to think that the problem might have occured after Virgin engineers sorted a connection fault on his broadband but he wasn't sure. He says he also gets 0x800ccc90 as well as 0x800ccc92. Any help very much appreciated Regards Dakar

So his ISP is Virgin Media - is the email address also something@virginmedia etc?

And yes, the settings can become corrupted for a number of different reasons.

With respect to Sea Urchin if mail is being sent OK but mail is not received this is the POP setting. The settings are given http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEWARTICLE&ARTICLEID=37928&CURRENTCMD=SEARCH&CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITIONID=1&USERTYPE=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTY=us&VMCUSTOMERTYPE=
