ntoskrnl error

Hello

My Friend has a DELL LATITUDE D510 Laptop running windows xp pro

The last few days it refuses to boot up and comes up with the following message

**Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Please reinstall a copy of above file**

I have used the recovery console and replaced the corrupt file but it still shows the same error, when i try and get it into safe mode the following message appears

STOP: c0000221 unknown hard error\systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll

Any help would be much appreciated
