Canon printer problems

Hi all
Here is the puzzle...
My Canon PIXMA iP3300 printer is attached to my desktop and has been printing fine for the 'majority' of the past year. However, during that time, occasionally the printer has not responded to the computer. That is also the situation at the moment.
So, my diagnosis thus far...I have printed successfully from my laptop using the same USB cable. I have attempted to print using "known working" USB ports on the desktop but to no avail. I have turned everything on and off lots of times and the printer is selected online in the preferences.
What is occurring?
Cheers

Have you looked on canon's website for an updates driver?

Thanks for the response. Why would I need an updated driver? Is it because Windows is being constantly updated and so its interface with the printer needs tweaking? Additionally, I tried re-installing the old driver from the disk and the printer was detected for a second or 2 before the the issue returned!
Cheers
