Minimum spec laptop to view videos

My wife has a very old laptop that will not play videos properly. She doesn't use it much so whilst I'd like to get a better one for viewing my home made videos I don't want to spend more than necessary. I'm thinking of a reconditioned one with XP (which she is used to) and wonder what minimum spec I should look for. The videos are on an external hard disk so storage space is not a problem.

I have a mid 90's HP laptop that will play videos so I suspect its maybe a software problem

What spec is her machine and what program are you trying to use to play the videos.

VLC will play almost anything and use very little resources

Klite codec pack will also play most things the Full pack includes a media player classic.
