Minor Sound Issue

Today I spent about 9 hours moving my Toshiba laptop from Vista to Win7 and all seems to have gone very well, except for one thing. The sounds used for things like menu pop up, critical stop etc do not work. They do when I test them from the dialog where they are set, but not in general use. They also work when clicked on in their folder. Any music files etc play normally, so no problem with sound not working in other areas. No big thing, but it niggles me. And yes I have overwritten the driver with the latest from Toshiba. Grateful for any help and advice.
