laptop won't shut down

My lap top won't shut down - any suggestions? I haven't installed anything new. No virus detected by spyware doctor.

Operating system?

Make + model of Laptop?

Can sometimes be a one off glitch - remove AC power - remove battery

refit battery - refit AC power - reboot

What exactly happens when you try to shutdow?

freezes on shutdown screen?

Trying to install an update but fails?

Screen goes blank but fans still running?
