My friend is using laptop Easy Note Packard Bell and the headphones work on Windows XP and Vista but not on Debian Linux Squeeze. The sound comes out of the loudspeaker but when I plug the headphones in, the sound does not come through.

I can't imagine why.
I use headphones on Debian all the time with no problems at all.
Just go into Alsa mixer and make sure nothing that is relevant is muted or turned down. While you're there, check preferences to make sure what you need is showing. But in all honesty, the defaults should be fine.
For the purposes of clarity, are you saying your friend has all three systems on the same laptop, or simply he/she uses the headphones on different computers?
