To help identify the problem for someone on here to assist you - what was the reason for running sfc /scannow in the first instance? If it found errors you would need your Vista install disc to do the repairs. The sound could be a driver problem ie: update driver required.

sfc /scannow problems see here if you do not have a vista CD and the op system came pre-installed.

northumbria61, Its the blind leading the blind in this instance, and I know that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but: I suggested running scannow because her Skype suddenly went off, and she has lost all Sound on the laptop, she uninstalled Skype with advice from the web, going through the registry after backing up, and removing anything to do with it. the latest version of Skype will not install, we now know that this seems to be a fairly common thing with this latest version. Sorry a bit long winded. Her Sound has just stopped, she has a Red X over the speaker in the System tray, she used msconfig to look in "Systemd" and her Audio is set to automatic, In device drivers under "Sound" the SoundMax is enabled. She has updated drivers, uninstalled the sound and restarted, with the same result. Fruit Bat/0\/0\, thanks for the link, I will pass this on.

I don't know why I suggested Scannow, but it has brought to light that something is amiss, and she should try and sort it.

Thank you both.
