Stuttering mp3's

I have just copied some audiobooks onto DVD disc to play in the car - which they do ok, BUT when I tested it in my win 7 pro 64 bit machine a lot of the tracks stutter.

I have music mp3's on the hard drive of this machine which play ok and the disc plays ok on my Xp machine. Some mp3 music I put on removable media (DVD/CD or flash drive) also stutters and still stutters if I load this onto the hard drive of the win 7 computer.

It seems totally random but a friend said it could be that the mp3's were created using different codecs. I know nothing about codecs.

All drivers etc are up to date on the win 7 machine - anyone have any ideas please?
