how much memory can laptop

hello, i have an IBM T42 Thinkpad, it has 1GB memory with two sticks of 512. what i would like to know is can i put 1GB in one memory slot and leave the 512 stick in the other one or would i have to buy two sticks of 1GB memory.

....but yes you can add just one stick of 1Gb and leave one of your 512Mb in the spare slot.
