Merging keys into Registry (W7)

My grandson uses a program called Ranger to access his school server. I need to merge some additional keys with the existing Registry to enable Rangers use with W7. I can't do this live as I get a report that some of the keys are in use for basic operation of the computer and even in Safe Mode the same error appears. What's the best way to proceed? I had thought of copying Registry, merging the new keys with the copy then trying to replace the original with the merged copy - will this work and how do I do it? Any help appreciated.

You could try exporting (right click and select 'export') the particular key/folder with which you need to merge additional keys. This will be saved as a .REG file. Open it with Notepad, add your additional data and save the file. Double-clicking the amended .REG file should insert it back into the registry overwriting the existing data.

It might be worth retaining a copy of the originally exported .REG file, just in case things go pear-shaped!

Are you sure that you need to amend the registry? If you have installed the program on the computer the only other thing you may have to do, is to 'allow' it in your firewall. I suggest that you have a look at the manual for Ranger Outpost and the one for your firewall.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm certain I need to add additional Keys to the Registry. When I unzip the Ranger Outpost download I have two additional files for Windows 7 users. One of these files is a .reg format and contains a lot of keys that need merging with the existing registry but simply right clicking and selecting 'merge' always produces an error message saying some of the keys are in use.

It seems to me I need to be able to merger the .reg file whilst the Registry isn't in use (so how do I operate the PC?) or perhaps copy the Registry and then merge with the copy and then substitute this modified file for the original Registry file. However I'm not keen to do this as it may result in major problems.

Of course the supplier of Ranger Outpost refuse to support the end user which makes it almost impossible to find out what to do. Very poor program from a poor supplier.

If you can identify the additional keys that are required, can you edit the registry manually to add those keys? As additional keys cannot already be in use, doing it that way shouldn't present a problem, other than the hassle of manual configuration.

Before doing anything in the registry, be sure to create a System Restore point.

Thanks mgmcc - it all seems rather complicated for an average user! This patch is supposedly for any parent with a W7 home computer. I'm sure they couldn't manage. However your suggestion has great merit and I will take a further look at the extensive .reg file to try to identify which Keys are additional and then add them manually. However it doesn't solve the problem of needing to alter the Keys that are already in use by the system.

Seems to me to be only one line in Ranger Outpost Win7 Reg fix.

As Follows

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] "LmCompatibilityLevel"=dword:00000001

The newest version now includes the following .reg file in addition to the one line fix issued with previous versions. It's far from short!

Dreadful program. Avoid if at all possible as the supplier refuses end user support.
