Bad download speeds with wireless, even with a good connection

I have recently noticed that my download speed has reduced, a lot. It used to be fine, like using an Ethernet cable with 1 - 1.5 megabyte/s download speeds but lately its been really low, like 40 kilobytes/s. My wireless status says: 'excellent 54 megabits/s' and I'm not sure what's wrong, I'm using a TP-Link TL-WN350GD 54Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter.

Any ideas?

Thanks

"But surely with a connection faster than what my ISP provides I should get the max download speed that I can in my area?" I don't understand that as you cannot have a speed faster than your ISP provides. If your router is only getting 0.7 mbps then that is quite slow. Is that with you connected by cable to the router?

It doesn't matter what speed the wireless connection is as it can only route the traffic that the router is getting eg if the speed reaching the router is 0.7 then that will be the limit.

wow, that optimiser works quite well, it usually drops down quite late at night so I can check whether it has actually worked tonight.

the optimiser seemed to work duing the day either that or it was actually fine in the day but it started t reduce from ~7pm and went down quite alot at ~9pm it was around 1.2MB/s before 7 and around 500kB/s between 7 - 9 but after nine it went back down to 100kB/s

Have you tried turning the router off then back on after about a minute for it to create a new connection

Also if you are on Wireless I suggest you try a different channel in the Wireless settings of the router, I have had to change mine. that's when my speed went up fully to what I am now getting
