XP PRO - BSODs after reinstall

After many problems, fresh install of XP Pro on aging PC. Crashes after completing boot sequence. More reliable in Safe Mode, but still fails at times when downloading updates. Loads of files in the Minidump folder, but no idea how to read them (can't make head or tail of the MS page on the matter).

Any ideas what may be causing this (I'm guessing driver)? I've replaced the gloop between CPU and heatsink. Thanks.

Would that indicate a 'dodgy' hdd or don't know? Just interested myself.

And why leave your friend with a doorstop? Could at least have tried Linux and left them with a different doorstop?

robin. I wondered, but the HDD passes WD test with no problems shown. Might persuade the owner to invest in a backup of some sort, though!

Small problem remaining which Google has been unable to cure. When telling PC to shut down, gets to 'windows is shutting down', then goes no further. Forced shutdown with pwr button gets round the problem, but I'd be interested to know why this is happening.

Thanks FB. Went to his house to set it up again. All OK until I tried Skype. Tripped off when he went to answer the call. Think the doorstop is getting closer!
