canon scanner

I have an LIDE20 scanner which I am trying to install in windows 7. I have downloaded the relevant driver file from Canon, but when I run the SETUPSG file, nothing happens and the computer doesn't recognise it. I tried the canon help desk who said to download the same file, but, again Windows doesn't load the driver. Any ideas please?

Am I not right in thinking that Windows 7 can work in XP Mode?

I know it's really a fix for Office Software but maybe that's a way around the problem.
