iPad1 help needed, please

Okay, I decided it was time to learn something new, and was seduced into buying a pre-loved iPad. Been using computers since VIC 20, and thought I knew what I was doing. Managed to get it seeing my router without a problem. However, I am now struggling. Any guru offer me advice - for example: it tells me that I do not have a gmail account. I do - since almost the year dot. I get into settings - and then can't get out. None of the beautiful icons seem to be working, either. Please, HELP an embarassed idiot!!

For Gmail, you need to download the correct App.
