This evening I received a phone call from an Asian man claiming to be calling from 'windows'. Background noise certainly sounded like a busy call centre. He informed me that my computer was infected with a virus and they had received multiple messages from it.

I asked him if he worked for Microsoft and he kept insisting that he worked for 'windows'. He was able to say that I had windows XP SP3 installed and that it was 9 years old. He invited me to right click on 'My Computer', click manage,event viewer, and ACEE event log. This contained a list of 37 events that occurred over a period of 4 seconds this morning. He said that they had received a message about each one of these and went on to claim that my AV software wasn't working. He further stated that he would tell me how to fix this and that he wouldn't be charging anything. Due to my obvious scepticism he was becoming more and more agitated.

When he asked me to log onto google I told him that I wasn't going to log onto any website on the suggestion of a complete stranger ringing me out of the blue and hung up.

Does anyone know what's going on here?
