Just bought a lap but need to connect to the internet..I am already connected to the internet on my desk top..

Presumably you are trying to connect "wirelessly" with the Laptop? Make sure the Laptop's wireless is switched on then click the network icon beside the clock to see the list of Available Wireless Networks. Select the one which matches the SSID (network name) of your router and click the Connect button. You will be prompted to enter and confirm any WEP/WPA/WPA2 encryption key (may be called a network key) and should then be connected to the router and internet.

That is, of course, assuming you have a wireless router! If not, you'll have to connect by cable.
