Broadband Speed Variation

i have a desktop PC and a netbook, both run windows 7, Both connect to the broadband router through a wifi connection.

When i run broadband speed tests on both machines in the same room on the same desk the desktop achieves a download speed of 300-400 kbps, the netbook returns a 6000kbps result. The upload speeds are the same. I have tried changing the pci wifi card in the desktop with little difference in results.

Help Please

I would start by comparing the speeds while the two computers are connected to the router by ethernet cable, not "wirelessly", to determine whether the problem is a wireless one.
