Hme Netwrk Ptch Panel, Prxy server Win 2003??

Hi Guys,

I have just moved in to a new house with basement and am planning to network all the rooms to this via patch panel. I am familiar with Netowrks etc but not with the fundamental Hardware configurations and best practices.

One of my main concerns is control over network access to the internet as well as internal security i.e. I have a 10month old, and more on the way so want to make sure I future proof for Parental security as well as network security i.e. young eyes looking where they shouldnt be, network storage for all concerned. Plus eventuall Firwall and Antispyware etc (the idea on not forking out and installing antivirus/spyware firewalls on all seperate boxes and control it all from one place). The network has to be fast enough for Video playback on all machines in use, again the idea I could be watching stuff down stairs and kids in the future could be watching upstairs with no issues.

The plan and my questions

Basically my plan is to run all cables down to basement using CAT6 cable and attach to Patch Panel. - No single run more than 100 meters, more like 30 -40 max

Then, and now here are my questions

Run the Patch panel in to a switch - question should I go with a switch or Hub - im thinking switch?
Run a Wireless Access Point to the patch panel as well. SO I can have Wireless through out the home as well.

Run the switch / hub to a WHS or Windows 2003 server - Question I basically want an internal Domain and AD seucrity here, as well as control to Internet Etc, should I add this here or to the Switch, or should I add a seperate Proxy to the switch at this point to act as the INternet control to the out bound modem and patch the server element to the patch panel. My main issue here is does Windows Home Server allow 3rd pArty installs like an application server or is pretty much locked down (firewall and internet parental monitor).

Any ideas thoughts etc would be greatly appreciated.
