icant download windows updates.i get error messages about downloading activex and security being too high.im running xp on 40 gig max data pc.any help out there

cant download updates as the message boxes are in grey why is this and what can i do.tried adding to secure sites but getting add http adress what is it any help appreciated

I had this problem recently on a new laptop.
You could try the advice from click here or a reinstall of IE6 as recommended click here using the instructions from click here.
These have worked for some people
In the event I found that the system could not write to the Downloaded Programme folder.
The problem was eventually sorted by a repair of XP as the instructions from click here
Apart from the time (about 45 minutes)the repair is straightforward.

With XP CD in drive type sfc /scannow in the run box press enter and sit back while XP relaces missing / corrupt system files and IE files.
