I have read that you cannot play DVDs using an external DVD player when running Windows 7 Starter edition
Is there software/solution to this ??
Thanks for any info

I've had an external dvd drive connected to my Samsung N159 netbook running Starter edition and that works.
You just need a media player that will play dvds.
Personally use this click here

What I do is:
Run the K Lite Mega installer
From the first drop down (it shows default)Select Lots of stuff
After that select/tick every box you can see.
Scroll down each one because they are not all ticked by default.
At the last screen where it says DONE and gives the option to Configure ffdshow etc. just leave the boxes blank and click Finish.
There are other media players you can use
VLC click here
Or if you prefer to use the Windows Media Player download the appropriate codec pack click here

After all, that when you connect an external drive and open it,the media files on it should open when you double click on them.
It worked for me but if you have any problems, post back here and I'll try to get you through them.

Slight addendum: after you select the Lots of stuff click Next,
Under ffdshow configuration tick Hide systray icons then scroll down on the same screen to Haali Media Splitter configuration and tick Hide systray icon.
Click on the Next box at the bottom of the window.
At the DXVA screen make sure all the boxes are unticked.Click Next.
Tick Media Player Classic under file associations then Next.
Under file associations tick Select all video and Select all audio.
Scroll down the audio column and tick the empty boxes at the bottom.
Tick Next.
At the next window (thumbnails) tick Select all.
The rest of the screens are self explanatory but at the Done screen don't tick any boxes.
Sorry if this seems complicated but the K Lite Mega Codec pack is quite sophisticated tool which allows you to alter the media settings on your computer which most other players assume by default.
Again if you have any problems come back.
