I am considering buying a new PC with Vista Home Premium installed. I have a lot of files that I have saved from my W98, will Vista still be able to read these? P.

its not the files its the programs that open them if they are ms office files, office installed in vista will still open them.

My main concern is that I don't know how Vista works and I have a lot of photographs on my existing external hard drive. I would like to know if they would still be accessable through Vista without having to alter them in any way for Vista to read them. P.

As far as I know the standard that W98 sets, I haven't changed them. P.

Yes, you'll be able to see them in Vista, which comes with a nice app called Photo Gallery.
