Vista Update takes over

Was this just a glitch? Or has Vista taken over?

This morning while reading a PDF file from the internet, I heard the hard drive activate, this is nothing new since installing Vista so I ignored it. A little while latter the PDF web page closed down? Sitting back I watched with surprise all my programs close then Vista with the message installing updates? My computer completely closed and rebooted.

Although the PDF web page I was last on opened when clicking on IE the previous pages had disappeared and I had to do another search. I wander what would have happened if I was half way through something important. Would it have been saved or lost forever?

To prevent this from happening again I have now changed the update setting to allow downloads but let me choose whether to install them.

So have I. It prevents the auto function kicking in and rebooting.

The setting on my windows update is to install them automatically and after the 4 microsoft updates yesterday, my computer installed them in the background then required a reboot but never shut down until I clicked restart now.
