Vista SP2, windows update fail.

Hi all, how do you remove all of windows update from a pc then install it. I have just fired up an old Vista PC after 18 months and I get the following message. "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer" However, Services, local and extended both show Windows update as automatic (Delayed) SATUS, STARTED.

Windows own fixit tool can not repair it nor offer any suggestions, I have followed cmd prompts offered online but the pc does not have the programmes.

Any useful advice, no I do not want to upgrade this pc as it is not Win 8 compatible, will be greatly received.

Start Search cmd.exe. Right-click and Run as Admin.

Type chkdsk c: /f /r

Schedule for reboot. It will take an hour+ probably.

Even if a Service appears started always right-click and Restart it.

Start Task-Manager and click Processes Tab.

Right-click explorer.exe and End Process.

Click File New Task (Run), type explorer.exe

Try an old Restore Point

Control Panel > System and Security > System > System Protection > System Restore

Find any Vista discs if you have them for Repair or Clean install possibilities.
