Vista PC not connecting with router

A 5-6 year old Vista PC will not connect with a local BT router. The owner uses Google mail and has been advised to re-install the router. Will emails be lost and will this cure the problem? The PC repeatedly shows an error message saying that Internet Explorer has stopped working when it hasn't, but recently the PC will not connect to the internet and is clearly not talking to the router. Going to 192.168.1.1 does not work and only produces the same error message. Use of the standard MS error investigation routine ends in the same error message again. Switching the kit off and on again etc., does no good. Help please.

  1. Re-installing the router will not lose existing emails.

  2. How is the router connecting to the Vista PC? Via ethernet or WiFi?

  3. Can other items such as laptops, iPads, phones etc connect to the router?
