system memory

i have just bought myself four 1 gig corsair 800 mhz memory sticks. for some reason in the vista welcome center it says i have 3 gigs of memory and says the same under system in 3d mark 2006 but the memory must be installed ok as when i clicked on system information under 3d mark 2006 it said i had all four banks full with 1 gig in each. have i not set up something in the bios?

Vista 32bit programs can only recognise a maximum of 4GB of RAM after it has taken into account any other memory on, for instance, graphics cards, sound cards etc.

Not necessarily.

For a start if you leave all four sticks in you are getting 3GB of usable memory. If you take out one of the sticks you will still have 3GB but it probably won't be as efficent as having four sticks giving 3GB - it's all to do with DDR dual channel.

Also it has been suggested that Microsoft might fix the 4GB limit or you might even get 64bit Vista then you can have 128GB RAM!!
