Sound issue, have to use optical to get green 3.5mm port to work

To get my headphone jack, the green 3.5mm one to work I have to have another cable plugged into the optical line, if I try and switch from headphones too speakers by swapping the cables I get no sound and have to reboot with the cables in the position I want them in to get it back. When I switch the cables it changes from Speakers to Realtek Digital Output, there is an optical and non-optical option.

This is getting incredibly annoying as I have to reboot my computer if I want to use headphones.

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks

When you change to headphones right click the sound icon in the notification area on the desktop. Select playback devices and make the 'phones default and vice versa.
