I have a sata hard drive from a failed desktop and want to download it's contents to either a ide hard drive or straight to a laptop using usb adaptor hope someone can help me.

You will need to use either a caddy (hard drive enclosure) or hard drive dock if you want to download it to your laptop. If you want to copy the drive to another drive such as an older IDE unit you would be best having both drives installed a PC. I suggest a caddy or dock and copy to the laptop.
