Reinstall Vista upgrade from safe mode?

Having BSOD problems (another posting - no fixes suggested, none of the Vista repair options have worked) and need to reinstall vista over vista rather than wiping a year of tweaks etc.

Problem is I have an upgrade DVD which means you can 'upgrade' over the top of the OS only from normal mode, not by booting from the DVD or from safe mode which is all I can get at the moment.

Anyone know of a workaround to this? Given that millions have had to reinstall an MS OS over the top of itself for years to fix things, it seems unbelievable that Microsoft would remove this solution!

You can do a clean install from an upgrade DVD if you have to.
Have you (anyway for running an upgrade) altered the BIOS to boot from the DVD first, so that it doesn't try and load windows.

Invariably BSOD's are either a recent software installation gone bad , or memory related .

If it BSOD's at the same place every time it is probably software , if it is random then usually memory .
