Recording Audio On Vista Causes Poor Quality

I'm simply trying to record a song from my audio tape player to Windows Vista using Audacity, Sony Soundforge, Nero and others but the sound quality is terrible.

I get an 'echo' effect, distortion and clicks and stuttering on THREE different computers all running Vista.

I have wired it from the line out of the tape machine to the line in of the sound card on PC's.

Having recorded thousands of songs before using this system (but on xp) I know it should work.

Can anyone advise as to what settings I should be using as my sound capture and speaker outputs are fine but for the poor quality.

Thanks, K!

I have noticed that recorded TV programmes and audio files played in iTunes etc. all have an 'echo' and a stutter while playing back. Songs even slow down slightly.

This seems to be every 30 seconds or so.

Any thoughts much appreciated
