"Upgrading" from 32 bit to 64 bit.

Question is this, upgrading to windows 7 64 bit (pc is 64 bit capable and ready), is it worthwhile making a back up or programs or best just to reinstall them?

The reason I ask is I remember different download links for some programs depending if you had 64 or 32 bit and my previous upgrade didnt delete anything.

My other question is: whats the easiest way to create a back up? Or is it more a case of saving pictures/documents I dont want to lose and having to reinstall all programs anyway?

Noob question I know but I've never had anything I wanted to keep before!
