Nintendo Switch review: Hands-on with the intuitive modular console and its disappointing games…
I am using my daughter's old HP computer as a back-up and am trying to bring everything up to date (the computer hasn't been actively used for appx. a year). The laptop is running Windows Vista and, every time I try to do a Windows update, I receive a message that says "Windows update cannot currently check since the service is not running". Anyone have any ideas on how to remidy this situation?
Thanks for the info Secret-Squirrel. I ran the the fix-it and it did fix a few problems. Unfortunately, the report showed "problems installing recent updates" was still not fixed. Would you have any other possible solutions?
No luck so far. It strange that, according to the report, everything has a green fixed check mark but the update still doesn't work. Maybe you can see something in the below report that I'm missing.

Find and fix problems with Windows Update
Did you disable your Anti-virus? Just a random thought, I don't have any other ideas.
Fixit, if Robin's suggestion about temporarily disabling your AV (and third-party firewall if you have one) doesn't help then tell me exactly what happens when you try to check for new updates. Don't forget to include any error messages and error codes in full.
