problems installing programs

I was recently forced to get a new PC (old one clapped out once too often) so got nice dual core with 2G ram - came with Vista ultimate.

generally things are OK (problems with games, etc but asit is basically a business machine, doesn't really matter).

However, a number of programs have caused real problems. the most recent was PDF converter 4 - the previous version worked fine on XP but not on Vista. it appears to fail to install but then appears in the right places. When I come to use it, I get message 'unable to load, windows is looking for an answer' and then 'Windows has closed the application'.
I have been on to Nuance who are (slowly) looking into it.
Has anyone else had similar problems and did you solve them?
