problem with windows 8 boot up - no cursor!

  simonjones 11:28 20 Sep 13

I have uninstalled Avast Internet Security (free edition). When I have restarted windows 8 to complete uninstall, it now boots ok and takes me to the standard 'start' screen. The problem is there is now NO cursor, so I can't select any options!!(e.g. access desktop etc).

I have tried all of the online advice to try to boot windows in 'safe mode', but none of them are working. Each time, windows 8 boots up ok and takes me to the same start screen with no cursor. Help!! :o)

Thanks in advance for any ideas and help :o)

Sorry! I didn't mean 'cursor', I mean the mouse arrow :o)

In the start screen just type cmd admin, that will open the search screen and will show cmd admin on the left. Press enter then type sfc/scnnow in the CMD window. Let it run and hopefully will find the error. You should be able to navigate the Start screen via the arrow keys if keyboard ok.

In the start screen press "c", that brings up the search screen, then continue to type so you get cmd admin in the search box. CMD will list in the left and press enter. The CMD window opens then type sfc/scannow and press enter. The system file checker will hopefully correct the error. Better explanation.

If you need to reboot then press the windows key + C to bring up the charms bar and use the arrow keys to navigate to settings, power then reboot.

Thanks very much for your help @rdave13

In the end, I plugged in an external mouse into the usb and managed to go to system restore and do it that way :o)

simonjones if I'd known it was a laptop I'd have recommended to use a usb mouse, then go to the thumpad settings to enable it. As you've done it in a round about way then that is great. Thanks for your feedback.
