Possible causes of audio drop-outs?

I'm experiencing random 100ms dropouts when playing mp3's in windows media player and vlc media player. Playing flac files seems to be ok. My old machine was Pentium 4 based running xp and it played everything with no problems. I now have an i5 based pc with 16GB of memory, a SSD running Windows 8.1 but it can't reliably play mp3's! Any help would be appreciated. Does anyone know what to look for in the performance monitor? Thanks in advance

100ms could be a fridge/ freezer cutting in or out. A 'click' interference. Do you use a UPS or a surge adaptor?
