Hi there i have windows vista home premium and im not connected through the internet ( using collge computer ) i was told i needed a router to use windows vist for the internet and not a modem provided by aol or bt or any isp, is this correct

Basically yes. Drivers are still a bit lacking when it comes to USB modems.

tiscali have vista drivers for their free modems.

  skidzy 19:53 11 Jun 07

No its not correct !

I have the Speedtouch 330 usb modem and using the xp driver on my Vista machine, there is a Vista driver availible...but if not broken, dont fix it.

Though that said, you would be better with a router and ethernet connection.

I stand corrected - clearly things have moved on since I last checked - sorry.

  skidzy 20:09 11 Jun 07

Silly thing is about the speedtouch modems, several people do have problems with there current software using the xp drivers, but if they are the first usb drivers to be installed it reduces conflicts.

like you say, things have moved on but slowly.

so i can get a usb modem then and it will work.

  skidzy 23:58 11 Jun 07

Do your research first Stephen....some usb modems can be picky as pointed out.
Look for one with Vista drivers preferably or the Speedtouch 330.
Though as i said earlier, router and ethernet is best.

Hi, i've got tiscali (pain in the ass). Using a Sagem [email protected] 800-840 modem. Follow their websites <a href="click here> help page</a> to install their modem and whatever you do don't phone their timbuctoo help line when after 10 minutes a guy will tell you he can't help, but will send a disc. Then send you one for the afforementioned speedtouch modem even though you've told him which one you have and after you've reinstalled your old PC and went online to troubleshoot yourself. Sorry rant over!
