Microphone wont work in WIndows7

I have just bought a new microphone for my PC running window 7 & can't get it to work. The best I have done is I can hear my voice out of the speakers but windows, windows live or Skype wont recognise it. I have checked all the settings I could find. In the recording devises tab it shows up but I don't get any green bars on the right & if I go into configure>set up microphone I get wizard could not start error message. I have a laptop & PC at work both using vista & have plugged it in & it works first time no settings to alter so is this a Windows 7 problem? Would appreciate any help!

may not be windows 7 compatible.what make and model is the microphone?is windows 7 64 bit?

It is a logitech labtec yes I am running windows 7 64 bit.
