Install XP On laptop with Vista

I bought a laptop nearly 6 months ago with Vista previously installed. I have talked with a few friends that have heard that Vista can be removed and XP put in its place, however, when I first tried, it grayed out the install XP option. So, after a bit more research, I rebooted the computer, and got into the setup for XP. I tried running the setup, but it said that it did not detect a hard drive, and foreced me to restart. So, I restarted again, following another sites advice, and once I got into the XP setup, i tried running the repair option, following this:

type "r" to enter repair
type "fixboot C:\"
type "fixmbr C:\"
reboot with a boot CD
at command prompt, type format C:\
restart and install XP

however, once I pressed "r", it said that there was no hard drive again, and forced me to restart. What am I doing wrong?
