files from vista to windows 7

I intend to replace my vista laptop with a windows 7 machine and wondered why I cant just copy the files to a hard drive and then on to the new laptop. Is it possible or is there an easier way?

You can of course copy your files to an external hard drive and transfer them from there - this is very straightforward. Or you could have a go at this
