I bought TP link,Ethernet switch,i connected up two computers and they are both connected to the Ethernet by cable. I am supposed to be able to move stuff from one computer to the other. no instructions how to do this came with the switch, and when I bring up "computer" on both computers there is no indication that they can see each other. I need help to dransfer data from one to the other. then if one hard disk goes down all my downloads will be on the other

You need to setup a Homegroup. Advice here.

Firstly, were both computers already connected to a router (either by cable or WiFi) for Internet access? In which case the router can act as an "Ethernet Switch" and you should not need the other equipment that you seem to have bought.

Some other information is needed in order to guide you. Firstly:

What operating systems are the computers using?

What firewall software are you using on the computers?
