Disconnecting from Network

Why when i leave my PC for a period of time and it goes into standby i lose the network connection with my router, which in turn loses internet connection.

Once i'm return to the PC i can't reconnect to the network unless i reboot the PC.

2 Things - is there a way of keeping the connection alive.
and is there a way of re-establishing the connection once it has been lost?

Thanks
