Desktop short cut causes laptop to go into a multi screen loop

When trying to get to standard desktop screen, the desktop screen will appear, followed by a blue screen, then windows8 screen, then back to desktop screen. Unable to do anything but use the power button to shut the laptop down. Cannot use windows explorer or anything that requires the PC to go to the standard "old looking" desktop

When you first start the laptop, is the lock screen available? If so then hold down the shift key and click on the power button and select restart. It should now start with the Advanced start up screen. Try and get to safe mode. Follow David Bailey's post, 09 Sep 2013, here.

That should be the sign-in screen not the lock screen.
