compress photos saving file space

I used to run Windows XP, where there was an option in photo manager to: select file/compress/ then choose e.g. documents e-mail etc. Choosing documents gave a photo with file size approximately 90% smaller, allowing many more files to be put on CD or USB.

Is there an equivalent somewhere in Windows 7? [Zip compression gives only marginal reduction in file size.]

If you respond, please keep it simple, as I am not very computer literate. Thanks, Terry.

The thing is, do you ever want to print the pictures? If so, 300 dots per inch (dpi) is needed. If you only want to see them on your monitor or iPad, or send them by e mail just to be seen on a PC, then 72 dpi is fine.

Once you have reduced them, however, unless you keep the original 300 dpi, the smaller ones will be blurred if you try to print them.
